The Pillars of IDS

The Power of Three: Introducing IDS in EOS

Strong teams don’t just react to problems — they surface them early, work them honestly, and put them to rest for good. That’s exactly what the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS®) is built to do, and at the center of it sits one deceptively simple tool: IDS — Identify, Discuss, Solve. The three steps of IDS Identify. Before you fix anything, name the real issue — not the symptom, not the story around it, but the actual root problem, stated clearly enough that the whole team agrees on what you’re solving. Discuss. Now open it up, but with purpose. This is a focused conversation, not a free-for-all: surface the relevant facts, hear every perspective, and resist jumping to solutions before the problem is fully understood. Solve. Land on the best path forward and turn it into action — a clear next step, an owner, and a due date. If the conversation ends without that, the issue isn’t solved; it’s just been discussed. Why it works Clarity and focus. Forcing every issue through “Identify” first cuts through the noise so the team works the right problem, not the loudest one. Efficiency. If you’ve ever sat in a meeting that circled for an hour and decided nothing, IDS is the antidote — structure that drives toward resolution. Accountability. Because “Solve” ends in action steps, everyone leaves knowing who owns what. Stronger team dynamics. Working issues together builds trust, sharpens communication, and creates real ownership. Fewer repeat problems. Solve an issue at the root and it stops resurfacing week after week. The bottom line IDS isn’t just a problem-solving checklist — it’s a discipline of proactive, clear, decisive leadership. For teams ready to stop spinning and start resolving, that’s the power of three. Your next step Want help putting IDS to work with your leadership team?
