The Five Myths About Leadership

The Five Myths About Leadership

Leadership gets buried under a lot of assumptions — and those assumptions quietly shape who we promote, who we follow, and how we lead. Drawing on John Maxwell’s The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, here are five of the most common myths, reframed for Integrators and leadership teams. 1. The Management Myth Leadership and management get treated as the same thing — they aren’t. Management keeps systems and processes running well; leadership influences people toward a vision and drives positive change. You need both, but maintaining the machine isn’t the same as moving people forward. 2. The Entrepreneur Myth A gifted salesperson or founder isn’t automatically a leader. Being persuasive enough to close a deal is real — but it’s a moment of influence, not the sustained, follow-me influence that defines leadership over time. 3. The Knowledge Myth “Knowledge is power,” wrote Francis Bacon — but knowledge and leadership aren’t the same thing. Plenty of brilliant people have deep expertise and high IQs without the ability to lead. Intelligence informs leadership; it doesn’t create it. 4. The Pioneer Myth Being first isn’t the same as leading. Someone can break new ground — even summit Everest first — without being the one who inspired and directed the team. Leadership requires people intentionally following your vision, not just coming after you. 5. The Position Myth The most stubborn myth of all: that a title makes you a leader. As Stanley Huffty put it, “It’s not the position that makes the leader; it’s the leader that makes the position.” Real influence doesn’t depend on the org chart — and the people with no title often carry the most. The common thread Strip away titles, intelligence, firsts, sales records, and management duties, and leadership comes down to one thing: influence. For Integrators especially, that’s good news — your impact was never about the seat’s authority. It’s about how well you move people toward what matters.
